Use of Was and Were
जब वाक्य के अंत में था, थी, थीं या थे मुख्य क्रिया के रूप में रहता है, तब was/were का प्रयोग किया जाता हैं, जैसा की आप नीचे दिए गए उदाहरणों से समझ सकते हैं –

| Third Person | He / She / It / Shyam was hungry. वह / श्याम भूखा था। | They / The boys were hungry. वे लोग / लड़के भूखे थे। |
Affirmative Sentences
Rules :- Subject + was/were + Complement.
Examples –
1 . मैं तैयार था। – I was ready.
2 . मैं अमीर था। – I was rich.
3 . तुम खुश थे। – You were happy.
4 . तुम थके थे। – You were tired.
5 . तुम किसान थे। – You were farmer.
6 . हमलोग लाचार थे। – We were helpless.
7 . हमलोग चालाक थे। – We were clever.
8 . वह डॉक्टर था। – He was a doctor.
9 . वह गायिका थी। – She was a singer.
10 . राम विद्यार्थी था। – Ram was a student.
Negative Sentences
Rules :- Subject + was/were + not + Complement.
Examples –
1 . मैं गरीब नहीं था। – I was not poor.
2 . मैं तैयार नहीं था। – I was not ready.
3 . तुम मेहनती नहीं थे। – You were not laborious.
4 . तुम संतुस्ट नहीं थे। – You were not satisfied.
5 . तुम बीमार नहीं थे। – You were not ill.
6 . हमलोग मोटे नहीं थे। – We were not fat.
7 . हमलोग भिखारी नहीं थे। – We were not beggar.
8 . वह मुर्ख नहीं था। – He was not foolish.
9 . वह पागल नहीं थी। – She was not mad.
10 . श्याम लेखक नहीं था। – Shyam was not writer.
Interrogative Sentences
Rules :- Was/Were + Subject + Complement?
Examples –
1 . क्या मैं वफादार था ? – Was I faithful?
2 . क्या मैं विद्वान था ? – Was I learned?
3 . क्या तुम चोर थे ? – Were you thief?
4 . क्या तुम डाकू थे ? – Were you robber?
5 . क्या तुम अच्छे थे ? – Were you good?
6 . क्या हमलोग निर्दय थे ? – Were we cruel?
7 . क्या हमलोग दोषी थे ? – Were we guilty?
8 . क्या वह बुरा था ? – Is he bad?

Why & How का प्रयोग
Rules :- Why / How + was/were + Subject + not (नहीं) + Complement?
Examples –
1 . मैं क्यों अच्छा था ? – Why was I good?
2 . मैं कैसे बुरा था ? – How was I bad?
3 . तुम क्यों चोर थे ? – Why were you thief?
4 . तुम क्यों ग़रीब थे ? – Why were you poor?
5 . तुम कैसे अमीर थे ? – How were you rich?
6 . हमलोग क्यों उदास नहीं थे ? – Why were we not sad?
7 . हमलोग कैसे दयालु नहीं थे ? – How were we not kind?
8 . वह क्यों क्रूर नहीं था ? – Why was he not cruel?
9 . वह कैसे बीमार नहीं थी ? – How was she not ill?
10 . हिमांशु क्यों खिलाड़ी नहीं था ? – Why was Himanshu not player?
